‘Fearsome Views’ explores the historical tipping of over 100 million tonnes of colliery waste into the sea from coastal pits in the Durham and Northumberland coalfield which has had a detrimental impact on the shoreline and seabed. Tipping began in the early 20th century and continued until 2005, when Lynemouth Colliery closed. Waste was tipped either directly over the clifftops or via various conveyors that extended across the beach to the sea. The legacy visual and community amenity impacts are substantial. Vast benches of compacted waste have formed artificial cliffs high on the foreshore, eroded only during the most extreme storm events. The eroding faces of these benches reveal a wide range of non-minestone debris, including conveyor belts, wire, cable, ropes, boots, hoses, ducts, pipes, sheeting, clothing, and more. A5, 80 pages.
