P Line. The bunkers of the Pyrenees

A visually striking photographic essay that explores the legacy of the P Line, the network of fortifications built in the Spanish side of the Pyrenees between 1945 and 1955. Through rigorous field research and more than 1,500 images taken between 2024 and 2025, the photographer and architect Iñaki Bergera documents the 185 defensive structures in Sector 23 in the Tena Valley (Huesca), revealing their silent presence, embedded within the landscape. Far from any picturesque perspective, this book brings together a carefully curated selection of approximately 70 photographs that depict architecture designed for a war that never came, yet which continues to inhabit the territory as a material memory of fear, violence and surveillance. The images offer a critical reading of the built landscape and its historical layers, where nature, military strategy and memory intertwine. The publication is organised into four sections —Typologies, Landscape, Spaces and Perspectives— which allow the reader to explore the defensive systems (machine-gun, mortar and artillery bunkers), their camouflage within the Pyrenean environment, the experience of their interiors, and the photographer’s own perspective on these structures, conceived as veritable ‘machines for seeing’. The result is a visual and documentary study of one of the most understated yet, at the same time, most unsettling features of the Spanish landscape.
