Empty Parking Spaces

A vertical plane and a horizontal plane: above, a wall; below, the tarmac, criss-crossed by lines that establish an order. Empty car parks, the presence of absence. The serial nature of these photographs, within the documentary tradition of creating cumulative comparisons, is the strength of Iñaki Bergera’s discourse. Under a non-conceptual narrative, the contemporary city, with its anonymous architecture and its non-places, offers us the opportunity to collect these decontextualised scenes, with no greater pretension than to be transparent representations of great formal beauty, albeit with a sombre theme, in a paradox that is precisely the key to Bergera’s work.
