What inspired you to start publishing books?
My own library has always been one of the most precious parts of my life. Books are not only sources of images, knowledge, and inspiration for me; they are companions that accumulate meaning over time. Starting to publish grew from that personal relationship with books—the wish to make objects that people can live with, return to, and perhaps keep on their own shelves for many years.
What draws you to the photobook as a format?
What draws me to the photobook is its ability to give a body of work a lasting, independent form. Unlike an exhibition, it can travel widely, be owned and collected at a relatively accessible price, and be revisited slowly and privately over time. I’m also drawn to books as timeless, tactile design objects: objects that can carry images, ideas, and material decisions across generations.
How has your practice changed over time?
Honestly, the core of my practice has not changed dramatically. My way of looking and working remains rooted in patience, attention, and allowing a project to develop at its own pace. What has changed is the publishing landscape: books are harder to sell, and each title requires even more careful consideration before committing to publication. This often means working with smaller, more realistic editions and being more selective about which projects truly need to become books.
What's a book you've been involved with that surprised you — either in how it came together or how it landed?
I find that every book is, in some way, a surprise. You can plan the editing, sequence, design, and production very carefully, but the book only fully reveals itself once it exists as an object and reaches readers. The way people respond to it, live with it, and make it part of their own libraries is always beyond your control—and often different from what you imagined.
What's next for you?
For the first time, we are planing to reprint a title: my own book, "Landeszentralbank Meiningen", will be published in a second edition. I have also long been interested in co-publishing and have a project in mind that could benefit from bringing together different perspectives, resources, and distribution networks.
