Smog Press is pleased to present ‘Pay Phone’, the first monograph from New York photographer Daniel Weiss. For more than a decade, Weiss has been photographing the streets of Manhattan, chronicling the rarities and oddities before they disappear. ‘Pay Phone’ is a collection of photographs centered around the now bygone era of pay phones and the advertisements adorning them. The phone booths act as a backdrop for Manhattan’s sidewalk citizens—graffiti etched into metal walls like cave drawings, clothes left behind like bedroom closets. In 2022, New York City removed the last public pay phone. ‘Pay Phone’ captures the last of their presence and their decline. “The pay phones were on their way out. I wanted to make my own record, using the booths as a stage and to block out the ugliness of the changing city behind them.” - Daniel Weiss - Daniel Eric Weiss (b.1987) is an American photographer who was born and raised in New York, NY. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Interview and Dazed. He captures images of a fading New York, often excluding the marks of modernity from his frame.
