LOST, London by Sergio A. Fernández, 2019 *Collected by Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Getty Institute, Whitney Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Syracuse University, ArtCenter College of Art and Design, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Arcadia University, Texas State University, University of Iowa, Ryerson University and George Washington University; amongst others. The story of these images of London starts at a second-hand bookshop in Tallahassee, Florida in 1997. Driving from Miami to Boston, with all my possessions in tow, I bought a very damaged copy of Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow, which took me 2 years to read. Somewhere within those 2 years, a painter friend showed me Frank Auerbach’s paintings of London in ruins after the Blitz. These works showed a city in mid-flight, at once being built and destroyed, all ochre steel girders and piles of charred wood. An image of thin supersonic arches and thick brushstrokes of oil paint combined in my mind and stayed there for almost a decade.
