What inspired you to start publishing books?
I’ve always loved viewing photographs in books. There’s something so intimate and personal about the experience of being quiet and alone and touching, feeling, looking and responding instinctively and emotionally to a book.
What draws you to the photobook as a format?
All of the above, plus the fact that I enjoy a books portability. To be able to carry around so much inspiration and beauty really does it for me. I think this is mostly why I’ve always preferred books that aren’t too large.
How has your practice changed over time?
I’ve become less and less interested in documenting and more and more interested in expressing thoughts, ideas and emotions. Visually my work has moved away from reality and towards a softer, more abstract form of photography.
What's a book you've been involved with that surprised you — either in how it came together or how it landed?
“Anywhere but here”, my first book with Photo Editions. It exceeded my expectations. The book has the most gentle, almost hand-made feel to it. The design and printing was so in sync with my photography.
What's next for you?
I’m obsessed with photobooks, so hopefully more books. I suspect I will be photographing and making books, by hand or traditionally published, until my last breath!
